Kugluktuk - Kangerlussaq

aboard Akademik Ioffe

There is no question that this remains a landscape where nature reigns supreme! Breathtaking scenery of towering mountains, fiords, glaciers and ice-bergs, enchant us as we follow in the footsteps of the early intrepid arctic explorers. This is truly a trip for the adventurous, taking us right to the 'Top of the World'.

The White Continent, with its multi-coloured ice-caps, glaciers and towering snow-capped mountains, offers attractive scenery and photographic opportunities. Sailing from Kangerlussuaq, we begin our Arctic Journey deep into the far North. Weather and landing conditions permitting, we will spend as much time ashore as possible, hiking and exploring the sites. The limited number of passengers aboard the vessel enables us to bring everyone, all at once, quickly and smoothly ashore with our inflatable Zodiacs. Regularly we try to land at'unknown' locations, which will contribute to the exploratory character of the Polar voyage.

Travelling well-beyond the Arctic Circle and into the far North, we explore western Greenland, eastern Baffin Island and the historic Northwest passage. You'll follow in the footsteps of early explorers who fought for 200 years to find a short route to Asia. Visit villages on the edge of massive fiords where Inuit have lived for generations, the sites of ancient civilisations dating back to AD1475 and Thule and Dorset Archaeological sites

Weather and wildlife encounters are less predictable than elsewhere in the North, but sightings of polar bears, walrus and bowhead whales are not unusual, especially at Lancaster Sound 'The Serengeti of the Arctic' where narwhals, beluga whales, harp seals and walrus are often found. This is also the best time of year to see Aurora Borealis dancing overhead.

As with all our expeditions, safety is our top priority. For that reason weather, ice or other conditions may require us to change our itinerary and shore excursions as we go but that is half the fun of Polar exploring. Predictability is a word that has no relevance in this environment.
