Wildlife of the Brazilian Pantanal and Cerrado

'Jaguars and Hyacinth Macaws'

Fixed departure dates: (9 Day tour)
Saturday 6 October 2012 - Sunday 14 October 2012

This tour has been designed bearing in mind the special needs of wildlife photographers and naturalists, who wish to explore the mythical Brazilian Pantanal and neighbouring Cerrado scrubland, discovering their unique biodiversity. These habitats are home to unique animals, like Maned Wolf, Giant Otter and the mighty Jaguar. More than 300 bird species thrive in this vast wilderness, considered to be the best and easiest place to watch and photograph wildlife in the Neotropics. We invite you to join on this fantastic nature journey of a lifetime to the heart of tropical South America. To ensure best fauna watching opportunities, our group size limit for this tour is 8 participants with one Tour leader.

The Cerrado, or Campo Cerrado, with its very characteristic vegetation, corresponds to the arboreal savanna of other tropical continents. It spreads over an area of more than 2 million square kilometers, taking in 22 % of Brazil's territory. This habitat covers most of Brazil's west-central region, stretching way into Paraguay. Sparsely scattered low trees and bushes with twisted branches, thick grooved bark, and leathery leaves give shape to this distinctive woodland.

Reddish-colored termite nests are prominent on the trunks and these are a great attraction to nesting Campo Flicker and Peach-fronted Parakeet, who tunnel into their depths. Thirty three thousand hectares of this dry scrubland are protected since 1989 within the boundaries of Chapada Dos Guimaraes National Park. Sitting in a high plateau 860 meters above sea level, this reserve is home to birds like Red-and-green Macaw, Blue-and-yellow Macaw, Red-legged Seriema, the secretive Collared Crescentchest and the endemic Rufous-winged Antshrike to name but a few. Some interesting mammals like Brazilian Tapir and Maned Wolf also make their home in this particular type of ecosystem.
