Wildlife of Eastern Patagonia
'With the Valdes Peninsula and Puerto Deseado'
|
Fixed departure dates: (9 Day tour)
Saturday 10 November - Sunday 18 November 2012
This tour has been specially designed for those who want to experience first hand Atlantic Patagonia with its spectacular shorelines and endless steppes. It is a unique natural history and nature photography adventure that will give tour participants the opportunity to enjoy Darwin's Patagonia, with its unique marine birds and mammals' colonies, and the vast Patagonian wilderness. Join us on this mythical journey through mighty Patagonia, home of the Southern Right Whales, Elephant Seals and Magellanic Penguins. Our group size limit for this tour is 8 participants with one Tour leader.
The Atlantic coast of eastern Patagonia and its surrounding arid steppes are two rich and productive areas in terms of wildlife abundance and diversity. The Valdes Peninsula is, by far, the best-known nature preserve in this area, supporting great numbers and diversity of marine mammals. This area is home to more than 32,000 Southern Elephant Seals and 8,000 Southern Sea Lions. But it is best known by its cetaceans, with roughly 1,000 Southern Right Whales relying on its waters yearly to complete their breeding cycle, and its world-renowned population of sea-lion feeding Orcas.

Further south along the coast lays Bahía Bustamante, one of the most spectacular and remote wildlife refuges of eastern Patagonia, offering not only a unique marine wildlife experience, but also a sample of Patagonia's geological history.
Finally, the southernmost point of our journey will take us to Puerto Deseado, where we will have the opportunity to visit Penguin Island. This solitary island is home to the only nesting colony of Rockhopper Penguins on the Atlantic coast of South America, and the estuary of the Deseado River hosts the most incredible array of fauna possibly found outside the Valdes including such unique wildlife as the only nesting colony of Red-legged Cormorant on the Atlantic coast and a resident population of Commerson's Dolphins.
Driving through the Patagonian steppe, we will always have the chance to see and photograph a wide diversity of terrestrial mammals including herds of Guanacos, Mara (also known as Patagonian Cavy), Large Hairy Armadillo and Patagonian Gray Fox to name but a few.
