Patagonia

'With the Moreno Glacier, Mount Fitz Roy and Torres del Paine'

Fixed departure dates: (9 Day tour)
Monday 19 November - Tuesday 27 November 2012

This tour will take you to the most spectacular and iconic sites of Patagonia, where the dry steppe reaches its highest altitude above sea level, lying over an endless high plateau only interrupted by the Andean range. It is here where the most spectacular mountains, lakes, and glaciers give the perfect frame for one of the most beautiful temperate forests of them all: the Sub Antarctic Beech Forest. Join us on this breathtaking journey through Andean Patagonia, where Pumas and Condors make their home amidst mighty mountains and ancient glaciers. Our group size limit for this tour is 8 participants with one Tour leader.

El Calafate is a charming village that sits on the shores of Lake Argentino. There is an international airport in town, and the quality of the hotels and restaurants is excellent. This is the main gateway to southwestern Patagonia, but overall to Los Glaciares National Park, a UNESCO Worldwide Natural Heritage Site since 1981. Its 717,800 hectares harbor 47 huge glaciers, including the emblematic and worldwide known Moreno. This is the best known and most visited glacier in Los Glaciares, mainly because it is easily accessed by land, but also because it is one of the few in our continent that advances and recedes constantly. One huge vertical five-kilometers ice wall of this glacier sinks into the Canal de los Témpanos (Channel of the Icebergs), which connects one of the arms of Lake Argentino -called Rico- with its main body. Huge masses of ice constantly collapse from the front wall; their thundering fall being welcomed by people's spontaneous applause at all times. The glacier was named after Francisco P. Moreno, a famous Argentine explorer, well known as the father of the National Parks in this country.
